In first year you learn how to write and you should be able to use those skills to help you now in second year. Development of your own voice and ideas. The content of lectures spans across a number of different subjects: Science, Cinema, Animation, Graphics, Art, Design, Philosophy, Cultural theory and more.
Theory Practice Bridge
There is an explicit bridge between theory and practice in the second and final years. The research and development you learn will be used toward your work in your portfolio, always write what you want.

For assessment a selection of pages from the contextual portfolio sketchbook should be digitally recorded for digital submission. They can be scanned, photographed, filmed, animated etc. A selection of 3 pages will be assessed at formative assessment point one. These pages will be presented in a 5 minute presentation. At the final summative assessment point, five different pages will be digitally submitted and assessed without presentation. The contextual portfolio is worth 2500 words.
In both formative and summative assessments you will demonstrate a contextual awareness of key theorists, designers and artists as well as their specific works with your own contemporary research in the theory as practice module. You will directly reference and give reasoning to the materials, methods, techniques, concepts and styles of the work presented as well as their relevance to your current work in the theory as practice module.
The essay is written in reponse to your own independent research that may be conducted in, but not limited to, histories, practices, theories and technologies in relation to contemporary graphic design and/or animation. You will draw upon historic and other disciplines such as: literature, philosophy, art, music and science. In this way, your studio practices, growing contextual portfolio sketchbook, theory lectures and seminars should all influence your process of writing the essay and producing a visual analysis.
The total word count for this essay is 5000 words (+/- 10%) (2a). The visual analysis totals 2500 words (+/- 10%) (2b).
The essay should contain:
1) A title that outlines a clear and focussed interest
2) A 150 word abstract which summarises the essays arguments and position
3) 5 keywords
4) An introduction that outlines the main themes and arguments presented throughout the essay
5) The main body of the essay should develop unique critical concepts and should contextualise theorists and themes
6) The inclusion of images
7) A conclusion that reaffirms the main arguments and identifies further questions
8) A reference list required to conform to the APA 6th referencing system
