Genealogical Method

Genealogy - tracing a history

What is method > creatively trace history, it is a fabricating of the past
                          > Not about digging up the facts, it is about defining the absolutes, it is synthesising, making and fabricating

History is typically mapped on a single linear axis
Projects with pre-determined ends don't allow for the vibrancies of chance, chaos, difference and unexpected experiences

Genealogy is a multidirectional non linear history - in this way it allows for complexity for the fore fronting of an unanticipational potential

> Time Lapse of Roots - analogy of our research, process of existence

Process of research of encountering the unexpected stuff, of reacting to that stuff and developing new relations. It is an exploration driven by a life of experience

Can you be mapped to a single linear series of events in the past, or a set of determined events in the future?* explored in future lectures

> Multiplicities - key word. You, like everything else, are complex things. You are made up of many multiplicities

> Culturally you are sister, human, citizen, musician, patient
Materialistically you are a collection of regenerating cells, subatomic noise, nutrients, digesting

These are all real that they are efficacious (they have an effect) but these things are often omitted from the experience of everyday life - constantly create narratives of the reason that dismiss the complexity of reality

Waking Life - The Ageing Paradox

These narratives are ways to make life more understandable - they are a way of reducing and abstracting reality unto something manageable
> Similar to the Studio Brief - this can be thought of as a critical narrative

Your projects are not more true or accurate versions of the event - that would be counter to the philosophy of the genealogy
Instead they are only alternatives

ALL representation is lacking - no amount of detail can represent in totality what you are nor what anything else is

Online profile for example, is only a single facet
There can be no total representation of reality only a partial re-imagining

Emphasising a particular narrative - it is selective and creative
> it is creative way to make meaning and express alterity (alternatives) you define your own narrative of things

You are writing history, not reading history
it can be interpreted as a "backstory" or and "emergence" of a thing
History is MORE than Romans and Tudors

Famously exhorted "God is dead"
On the Genealogy of Morality
Beyond Good and Evil
Shows that morality and notions of good and evil are fabricated over history rather than being timeless values delivered from the church
Notions of what is good and what is bad change over times
