Showreel

Today's workshop was about collecting all the work from the After Effects workshops and produce a showreel. There was a similar workshop to this one using Premiere Pro.  I've found After Effects much easier to use since I am now incorporating the skills and ideas into my studio work and I have started to develop the work created in workshop time.  It is important to bring together your work and showcase what you like best or feel is the strongest piece/s. I learnt that by showcasing everything you've ever done will only encourage potential clients to contact you for a commissioned piece using a skill that you might not particularly like or have the strongest skills to do, so by showing what you ENJOY and feel good at is important.  I plan on developing some other work that I haven't put into this showreel as I feel it isn't up to the same standard as the ones shown.  Putting more practice into s...

Bread Typography

Image
I was looking forward to this workshop but unfortunately had to miss it!  However, using notes and inspiration from Nick's instagram I have completed the workshop in my own time. I chose to keep the letters quite large and visible and used alternative textures for each letter by keeping some as bread and others were toasted.  I used ten different coloured pieces of paper for the backgrounds of each letter, so for the letter 'A' it shows the ten different colours in one GIF, I did this for each letter and this resulted in what would've been a minute long GIF, which isn't really the idea of them.  So I chose alternative coloured backgrounds to create the alphabet GIF.

Info-Graphics

Todays workshop was about collaborating with Heritage Quay at the University to create a number of films. Using data and stats from the archives I created this ten second piece that is part of a final video filled with other students' work.  I struggled to finish this within the workshop time, I find that I'm still getting to grips with After Effects and should use it and a regular basis as oppose to workshop time. Although I'm happy with the outcome and have definitely learned a new skill in the programme! 35_Maria Lynam from Maria Lynam on Vimeo .

Working with typography in todays workshop, specifically Cooper Std, Baskerville and DIN Condensed.  The main aim today was to focus on shapes, negative space and composition. I liked the idea of carefully placing each shape and creating some sort of pattern that connected each shape together, like placing two shapes back to back or one inside another curve. I plan to rework these in Photoshop using overlay, adding colour and changing saturations and hues.  I took these images into Photoshop and either used all the shapes or one in particular to create a explosions of colour! Using layers, hues and saturations and different sizes.  Baskerville Cooper Std DIN Condensed

Video Editing_Premiere Pro CC

The two first videos are from the workshop using Jays work. All Cinema 4D workshops are now finished for this term so todays workshop was focussed around presenting our work in a professional way using Premiere Pro.  I've never used Premiere before so I was looking forward to the outcomes of this workshop. Creating slideshows, editing video clips for a showreel, adding sound and rendering out the video correctly were all part of todays tasks.  We used Jay's work as an example of what the final outcomes would look like, the idea is that we take away the skills learnt today and create our own showreels etc.  Premiere Pro_Year One Studio Briefs from Maria Lynam on Vimeo . After the workshop I created my own showreel/slideshow using work from first year, the video above shows all the final outcomes from the studio briefs, the first being a magazine related to Manchester and the 90s, the second was a live brief for the Penguin Design ...

3D Project

Image
Todays workshop was inspired by MGMT, 'All We Ever Wanted Was Everything' a music video that incorporates animation and techniques that I learnt in todays workshop.  MGMT - All We Ever Wanted Was Everything from oneedo on Vimeo . I learnt about cameras, animating in 3D, adding textures, visual styling and z-space.  I used artwork that I had created prior to the workshop and added in textures, a page turn effect (similar to the MGMT video) lighting and cameras. I enjoyed todays workshop but wasn't overly happy with the final outcome. 3D Project_Workshop - Newcastle from Maria Lynam on Vimeo . After the workshop I created new artwork to use and created another video that I am much happier with!  I really like the page turn effect and wanted to make this the main focus for the video and thought it worked better with these drawings. I also incorporated text into the background in relation to New York City.   Below is the artwork...

Self Publishing_The Stencil

Todays workshop was related to war and specifically in France, May 1968. General strikes and occupation of universities and factories brought its entire economy to a halt. There were protests that spurred an artistic movement, with songs, graffiti, posters, slogans and also intense violence. It is still considered as a cultural, social and moral turning point in the history of the country. Today was about combining some of the imagery of those posters and graphic art, with the lyrics of The Stone Roses 'Bye Bye Badman' a song which references the uprising, using the lyrics as typographic content.  I created the stencil first and then the typography which was then painted one on top of the other, I created the soldier silhouette first and then chose another object, the television. With this I created a scene that would be typically set with a television, just to take a different approach and outcome.  I chose to revis...

Sub-Object Modelling

First workshop of Term 2!  Looking at modelling and sub-object modelling within Cinema 4D, the outcome was to create a simple 3D characters suitable for basic rigging, sculpting or 3D printing.  Building the character, adding materials and lighting and then finally rendering out the animation was part of todays workshop, I am really happy with the outcome and it is something to consider for future projects. Todays workshop was about creating unique portraits using limited materials. We started with a black and white image of ourselves that we then had to cut up and create an abstract image of ourselves - the idea was to not think too much about it and parts randomly.  We then had to redraw the the abstract portrait. I really enjoy Nick's workshops, it gives me the chance to create more hand rendered work which is something I like doing. We created some scans by photocopying the side of our faces and creating another abstract image from this.  The final stage of the workshop was to focus on tone using ben day dots. I chose to use the first abstract image (this was on a bigger scale) and recreate the same image.

Prototyping

Image
Final Cinema 4D workshop of the year! We ended with a workshop on Prototyping which is something that can be used for future projects to mock up ideas.  We used templates made by Jay in the lesson today just to see what the final outcome would look like - I have produced my own beer and can label to use as development for this workshop.  I chose to use the typography from a freelancing project that I have been working on, using similar shapes and typography to create a simple label. I then looked back through the workshop notes and placed my designs onto the bottle and can modelling.

Rotoscoping

Something that I've never done before in After Effects!  Rotoscoping is an animation used frame by frame to create realistic actions. I am happy with the outcome I produced today, I finished this after the workshop as I wanted to ensure that the masking and cropping of the bottle was correct. I then added a background, berries and a vector image of the Vimto logo.  We focussed on creating masks, loops, compositions and layer effects. I found this easy to understand after the process was explained and I am happy with the final outcome! Today's workshop was about creating as many posters as possible with only the materials supplied: Scissors  Glue Letters - 3 different font styles Artists like Anthony Burrill, Experimental Jetset and Nike use posters to promote their work. We had to think about the tone of voice and visual impact of the poster, ensuring that it was a stand out piece of work.  The content of the posters were: We're all sensitive people. Our tools shape us.  Technology is biology. Imagine you are falling.  I used three of these sentences to create the posters...
